fascism in the 1940s has been on my mind lately, more than ever. On a lighter note, I think of mom and her sisters dancing to the live music of big bands like Tommy Dorsey and Glenn Miller at college in the late 30s and early 40s. As a child I remember seeing the nice long dresses they wore to those events which made a real impression as mentioned here before.
But it wasn't all fun then by any means with rationing, sacrifices, concern over loved ones serving in the military and at war. Also the tragic losses and enormous tensions over the final outcome of a Second World War.
A different era for Boomers don't we know- the post war boom with prosperity for many but not for all. Consumer goods galore, American cars, television, the Atomic Age, an explosion of creative, new music. Serious activism over Viet Nam, assassinations, Civil Rights, Women's Rights, the environment and more. But IMO it was a different strife, just as serious but not as intense as a six- year, all out, critical life and death Second World War with international ramifications. ~ Anyway, here's to The Greatest Generation, and their parents who endured hardships of the Depression!
