Vocally you can hear the wear that cocaine had taken on Jones at that point, and if you listen to the next track of that album you really get an appreciation for just how low he was at that point in his life...
"I've seen the dark side of life" is truer than most people knew as Jones was living in his car most night in Printer's Ally in Nashville when he recorded that song.
