out I did not have verbal communication skills for more than just a short time at that age. I was in the wrong relationships with some friends as I did not think I had any other skills either. I had forgotten I was very creative, which I knew at 12. I had forgotten my own narrative. It looked to me like I would never be one of those people who married happily. A few years later I read "The Grass Is Singing" by Dorris Lessing and realized I did not want to be married if I could not find someone I could communicate with. That I would be happier on my own. Now, when I hear that song, I think of that great loss I felt at 17. It is a poignant reminder that it took loss to send me on a better path for myself as loss often does. I hit 18 and moved on.
