But the wider pop audience never truly bought in.

I got to admit that the top 40 radio R.E.M. playlist wouldn't do much to attract a long-term fan base

But I'll always love 'em

Drivin' & Cryin', which were around (with a different lineup) in the 80s too.

That's a good point though. For as much as you still hear REM's influence in indie/college rock, I can't say I've heard very many covers of their songs either.
