On this day, August 24, 1972, Neil Diamond performed a concert at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles.

The performance was recorded and turned into the album "Hot August Night."

It was fifty years ago tonight.

Live album by Neil Diamond
Released: December 9, 1972
Recorded: August 24, 1972
Venue: Greek Theatre, Los Angeles, California

Hot August Night is a 1972 live double album by Neil Diamond. The album is a recording of a Diamond concert on August 24, 1972, one of ten sold-out concerts that Diamond performed that month at The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. This also marks the first album released by the newly formed MCA Records (a merging of the Uni, Kapp, and Decca labels).

Diamond later released three live "sequel" albums, Hot August Night II (1987), Hot August Night/NYC (2009), and Hot August Night III (2018), as well as the Love at the Greek live album, issued in 1977.

I'm not sure there is a video of that concert. Too bad.

Mon Feb 28, 2022: CBS broadcast "Hot August Night" a few years back. Suitably, on a hot night in August.

I thought, "I'll just watch a few minutes of this."

Nope. It was great. Terrific show.

It's out there. You can find it. I'd love to have the DVD.

Edited: after looking around at YouTube, I think the one I saw was a much later remake of the original. I know I wasn't watching a performance from 1972. So I saw "Hot August Night II," or whatever. It's still worth viewing.

In my opinion, he wrote the best pop tune of the whole 1960s: "I'm a Believer."

I guess Micky's the last one, isn't he?

Most people would be surprised at how extensive and brilliant his song catalogue is, far beyond the Sweet Caroline, Song Sung Blue pop.

In my view he was best at brooding and sizzling tunes.

Of course when I sing, it makes people’s ears bleed, my son and husband say.
Jesus Christ, Fanny Brice, Ho…Brilliant. And life affirming.
