KHJ Boss Radio disc jockey Robert W. Morgan - "Cruisin' 1965

While the link on YouTube says this is a KHJ aircheck, it's not. It's a re-creation that comes from the superb vintage "Cruisin'" album series that re-created airchecks by '60s and '70s deejays. Robert W. Morgan's entry was one of the best (and also one of my favorites). Includes music and vintage commercials and a great spot with a caller.

Kris Erik Stevens WLS 1970. It was not part of the original Ron Jacobs produced series from 1955-1967. Jacobs, the original Too 40 PD at KHJ, personally secured the music rights, wrote the copy and produced the recordings. He had to pour coffee down the throat of B. Mitchel Reed to transform him from a laid back 70s progressive jock back to his 1963 WMCA form.

I own most of them on vinyl, with 1966 and 1970 on CD. Morgan is my favorite, with Dr. Don Rose at WQXI 1967 a close second. By the way, the caller who was Morganized was a recreation, too. She had been a secretary at KHJ. Morgan’s second wife had been Jacob’s secretary, but it wasn’t Shelley.

After the music licenses expired, bastardized versions on cassette and CD were made. Most of the music was replaced, and the jock patter doesn’t track. Jacobs had nothing to do with them, and roundly condemned those versions as only RJ could (he and Morgan used to have titanic battles at KHJ).

Another of my favorites in the series is Arnie "Woo Woo" Ginsberg, who I used to listen to when I lived in the Boston area. The B. Mitchell Reed one is a favorite, too, as I lived in the NY area for a while and heard him on WMCA.

He testified before the Warren Commission because Jack Ruby brought sandwiches to the station that Friday night.

Lots of famous jocks worked at WMEX for Max Richmond — at least until they could make their escape. They included Jack Gale (WAYS), Larry Lujack (WLS), Charlie Tuna (KHJ), J J Jeffrey (WRKO, WLS, WFIL) and Jack Armstrong (Everywhere). All but Jeffrey are gone now.
