That Ringo added much beyond drumming to the group. His added ideas and twists to the song writing were great.

He's not a show-off drummer, and he doesn't go out of his way to make "too many notes".

Don't get me wrong, I also love Stewart Copeland and he has his own genius. His complicated drumming is what made a minimal 3-piece band seem so huge.

Ringo's genius was in his musicality and composition. The Beatles were masters at making the whole work together. They rarely made songs a showcase for one instrument or another. It was always about everything in the song working together in the right balance.

Ringo had a knack for getting just the right rhythm that worked with the song. You rarely say wow, listen to the drums on this one, yet his drums clearly added to and supported the song.

Moreover, his fills and liberal use of the high notes were an important part of making the early Beatles' songs so energetic and infectious.
