That's because it was played on a Fender Subsonic. It's a 27.5 inch scale guitar with a nut cut for .12 to .66 strings.
It's tuned down to a B, so it's a baritone instrument, not a tenor.
The heavy strings and long scale give a unique set of resonant frequencies so the guitar sounds big & growls.
They still make a cheap version of this guitar, but the original American made versions were nearly 2 grand.
The Fender dealer brochures even mentioned this song back in the mid 90s. I used to get the brochure every year but they stopped sending them to me 5 or 6 years ago.

That grabs my ear every time.
