1. Seems like a lot of time spent with a computer

To get the pictures that way.
I don't think that I want to work that way.
A personal choice.

2. There are other ways to achieve the look.

Filters to soften the focus, stretch a piece of cellophane over the lens and poke a hole in the middle or use a clear filter over the lens and smear Vaseline around the outside edges.

What I found interesting was the look of the images. That the photographer had an idea of what outcome she wanted before taking the picture. How you get there is up to you.
