Prickly pear cactus growing out of the stump of a saguaro cactus arm.
This shows how high up it is in the cactus arm.

I'm thinking a bird landed up there with part of a prickly pear fruit and a seed dropped out and it sprouted. Or maybe the bird had eaten some seeds and pooped them out. All the stars had to be lined up for that cactus seed to wind up in the arm of the saguaro and to sprout and grow.

Open-mouthed astonishment at the prickly pear growing in the saguaro cactus arm.
Wonder how well it will do in the long haul?

(9,445 posts)8. I'm concerned about the saguaro and the prickly pear.
Some new homes are going in and I'm afraid the construction crew will take down that old saguaro.
