Related: About this forumOctober 8, 2022 moon photo.
This is the best of the bunch. The moon had to clear some clouds, and was quite colorful when low, but I usually have lots of air turbulence here, ridges and ravines and thermals, so I waited a bit. Voila. Take pics when the air is clear and steady!
No foolin' about the turbulence.
Often stars and planets near the horizon will "dance" like a UFO with a drunken pilot. It's quite the sight.
Just one pass of sharpening and I underexposed a bit so that the highlights wouldn't block up.
🌝 ENJOY! 🌝

(149,620 posts)When you underexpose, you don't lose the details which would otherwise be blasted into nothing. Well done!
I really wanted to join the happy throng tonight, but couldn't, since the clouds had other ideas! Oh well.
I enjoy shooting the waning gibbous moon too. In fact, I often prefer it to the full moon, since the craters are much more visible when in the gibbous phase.
Here's an example:
It was taken December 21, 2021, the Solstice Moon.

(35,673 posts)The moon floating through those feathery clouds (photo 3. What a moment. So glad you captured this.
I was experimenting with ISO settings. That shot captured the mood. It's just a bit brighter than the visual impression, but it shows off some nice detail. Happy that you like it.

(9,802 posts)Cameras do fun stuff with color. I try to keep the colors as "true" as possible.
And the color changes with elevation over the horizon.
I have some pretty heavy-duty hobbies that I could spend even more time on (I'm retired), and I dropped some that I just can't spend any time on. Keeping busy helps me tune out some of the din. It's not that I'm ignoring facts. Just not letting them dwell. I try to post positive and supportive stuff here. (besides the photos and funny stuff)
I spent most of the day taking more manzanita photos. I have an arboretum's worth of them here. Beautiful plants.

(20,249 posts)Gonna check out them manzanita.
I know the name, but the look is not in front of me.
What HD hobbies did you lay aside if I'm not so presumptuous to ask?
I do it to myself. Get emotional over so much heart rending stuff taking place in my personal world and beyond.
Some of my 'counsel' admonished me to cool it.

(9,802 posts)beyond keeping the computers running. I used to build them before there were home computers. I still have the boards. I would like to build electronic projects with raspberry pi computers but I am booked solid. Other stuff? I forgot
Oh, I used to grow lots of roses, but not here. They are candy to deer. Maybe elsewhere.
I just repair stuff, of necessity.
I'll post some manzanita photos. Later. I didn't want to spoil the nice mood in this thread, but sure, some things are horrific. Nearby.
Warning: heart wrenching.

How to make things better? Working on it. That's for another thread.
Phone cameras let you edit quite a bit. If it's art, OK.

(20,249 posts)Made furniture at first, then carvings. Water fowl primarily. He turned out some really nice figures. Duck, loon, others. He made a large pelican for us. I donated it and all else we had when my husband died. Dad carved a very nice plaque for the church community they were members of in CT.
I think I used manzanita branches for scenery props I made for a church fashion show I chaired back in the 70's.
The actual trees are lovely. I read some regarding their planting conditions on the east coast here.
You mentioned building computers. A high school buddy moved up to Massachusetts landing a position with DEC. He actually did build a computer while there. I don't remember the details.
I'm tech challenged. Just know enough to get by. And cause trouble.😁

(31,389 posts)tonight. That could be because the Moon has to get quite a bit above the horizon before it clears the trees in the spot where it was rising tonight at my house.
When I lived in a high rise apartment (17th floor) in downtown Raleigh, my apartment faced east. I used to get a gorgeous view of the Moon changing color from orange to bright light some nights when it was rising. And the sunrise, dawn color changes, were marvelous.

(9,802 posts)So who knows what was going on. No wildfires lately that I know of. It got cloudy later in the night, as shown above. I have mountains on both sides of the ridge for background. Hence, my penchant for wide-angle lenses.
