Related: About this forumI was assured both Green Singing Finches were male
Their names are Halle and Lujah - Lujah kept singing and singing and Halle kept hopping about and listening.
Now (s)he is sitting on 3 eggs.
(I got suspicious after a couple of weeks. I have bred canaries in the past. I just could not afford canaries any more, and the finches were my first try at bringing bird song into the house in a long time. Lujah's song, especially now that he is entertaining her in this boring task of incubating the eggs, is as beautiful as a canary's. Who knew?)

(53,959 posts)Green canaries, yes. The interesting thing about green canaries is both sexes sing! Well, I just looked it up, green singing finches are actually canaries!
Nice picture. It reminds me of my dearly departed, Juno.

(22,380 posts)They are in the canary family. Their song is different, more brief, and almost equally melodious. And only the male sings around here. I've had them a few months.

(53,959 posts)It is really interesting to watch the female sing and the male respond. Juno had become somewhat tame, so when I had to reach in the cage to clean or add water, she would sit on my finger. That's when I started to "sing" to her, then she would respond. Sometimes, she would turn to the part of the cage facing us and sing when she wanted attention.

(22,380 posts)My Mom told this, last year, after she finished I looked at her aghast and said, "that would explain my love of canaries":
"I had you in a carriage, you were a few months old. There was an air raid warning that our town would be bombed (spring 1945 in Germany) and we headed out of town on bikes, pulling the carriage behind your Dad's bike. The low flying spray bombers came along the road, and we got into the ditch, and in the last minute got we managed to flatten ourselves way down. There was just a split second left after I set the cage into the carriage with you."
"What was in the cage?"
"A canary".

(22,380 posts)as far as my experience with canaries goes that is not something they are interested in either.
Big difference from parakeets. I've never had one of those, because they don't sing.

If my wife didn't have problems with loud noises, I'd have another bird. A songbird would be nice.
