Today, a Black Swallowtail enjoyed the lilacs

The black ones are much more difficult to shoot, because they won't stay put for but a few seconds on any bloom. Plus, it's windy.

Oddly ruffled..It is the patterning on the wings. They seem to curl don’t they? Lovely lilacs…

Taking pictures of insects can be maddening. Your depth of field tends to be shit. They won’t stay still unless they are looking the wrong way. And when it all lines up a breeze comes in.
