In Sitka we visited the Fortress of the Bear http://fortressofthebear.org ,which is a home for orphaned bears created from an abandoned pulp mill. After rescue, the cubs become too habituated to humans to be released into the wild, but the owners of this site have tried to create as natural an environment for the critters as they can. Their plans include rerouting part of the nearby stream into the enclosure and providing live salmon. There are five bears currently at the site. Here is one doing yoga to keep in shape.

(22,758 posts)we only have black bears and they are too elusive for me to get photos... but they are here one morning last week I looked out a my birdfeeders.... oh, oh... not there.. went out and found them smashed flat (metal!!) with all the sunflower seed gone... I am glad the bear got a good meal

(46,436 posts)We saw one in Juneau, and even though he was walking along by the side of the road, he kept getting behind trees so that I couldn't get a good shot. Another one we saw in Juneau dashed off before I could even get out of the car. The grizzlies we saw up by Tok were right out in the open and paying me absolutely no attention.
The bear in this photo is a brown bear which is a separate subspecies that lives in Southeast Alaska along the coast. They're related to polar bears.

(46,436 posts)They were really quite amusing. It seemed like they really enjoyed interacting with the humans on the observatory deck.
