infrared

i thought id post some infrared photos to demonstrate the versatility of the technique
these are all the same photo, just processed differently
all taken with a nikon d70 with a 590nm filter. this allows for deep blue skys and yellow foliage in post processing
the white balance of the camera has been custon set. I took a photo of green grass in bright sunshine and used that for the white balance (grass comes out white in IR) my camera wont shoot raw so setting the wb is more importatnt than in a camera that lets you shoot raw

here is the photo straight out of the camera

this is the same photo although i used photoshop to swap the red and blue color channels. this is what gives the nice blue sky
it also turns foliage yellow

here i used silverfx to convert the red photo to b/w

here i used silverfx with and used one of the presets. i also applied a green filter and played witht he contrast. i like the ghostly image since it makes the texas state capital seem haunted (which based on the actions of our legislatures it certainly is )

heres another view of the capitol showing nice white foliage

one thing about shooting ir. rather than waiting for a cloudy day with muted shadows ive found ir works best in bright sunshine

1. I've taken the infrared filter out of digital cameras I've found in thrift stores.

That way I don't have to rely on bright sunshine leaking past the built-in filter. I can take IR pictures anywhere.

I'm not wealthy so I'm not going to modify an expensive DSLR.
