"White Blaze"

Last edited Fri Sep 13, 2013, 02:19 PM - Edit history (1)

A blaze is a rectangle of paint in a prominent place along a trail. White-paint blazes two inches wide and six inches high mark the A.T. itself. Side trails and shelter trails use blue blazes; blazes of other colors and shapes mark other intersecting trails. Two white blazes, one above the other, signal an obscure turn, route change, incoming side trail, or other situation that requires you to be especially alert to changes in direction. In some areas, one of the two blazes will be offset in the direction of the turn.

Built by the Green Mountain Club between 1910 and 1930, the Long Trail is the oldest long-distance trail in the United States. The Long Trail follows the main ridge of the Green Mountains from the Massachusetts-Vermont line to the Canadian border as it crosses Vermont's highest peaks. It was the inspiration for the Appalachian Trail, which coincides with it for one hundred miles in the southern third of the state.

When on the trail, the white blaze is akin to a icy cold drink offered after hard work on a very hot day! Always appreciated, no matter where the trail leads... just to know I'm going the correct way!

...even if it is going up a big boulder...

had a difficult time figuring this one out... finally figured the trail was straight up all the rock...

my summer of hiking hasn't turned out as I expected... (expectation: thru hike AT--5 months... reality: off and on because life got in the way, as it does for many... I had to go through the grieving process... loss of a dream ) I am still leap-frogging around the AT but also doing sections on the Long Trail as I am able (LT is more doable as I can get rides to and from the trail in order to keep up with other responsibilities). This last week I have been going Southbound on the LT. I hope to keep hiking through the fall and end on my B-day (end of October) My son works with Green Mountain Club (GMC) so he continues to encourage me to finish the LT.

Just had a phone interview yesterday so if I get the job my plans may change a bit... I have learned to be VERY flexible in my comings and goings

only 273 miles...

Good luck on the job and your goal.

I need to learn to be more flexible.
