(34,111 posts)Not certain what kind but would guess Antelope Horn?
EDIT already second guessing myself. I have never seen them with the long parts so maybe not
Check the thread for the identity.

(34,111 posts)I have never heard of it. Cool plant and such a wonderful way to disperse the seeds.

(21,849 posts)I have no idea of the plant but marvel at the structure, which would allow winds to carry the seed pod far. Take me away, Wind!

(20,886 posts)But it would take a hefty wind to carry it. These puppies are about 3" long.

(60,010 posts)which Google images seem to suggest
then it is a member of the sesame family
and an important medicinal herb.
from Medline..
"Devils claw is an herb. The botanical name, Harpagophytum, means hook plant in Greek. This plant, which is native to Africa, gets its name from the appearance of its fruit, which is covered with hooks meant to attach onto animals in order to spread the seeds. The roots and tubers of the plant are used to make medicine.
Devils claw is used for hardening of the arteries" (atherosclerosis), arthritis, gout, muscle pain (myalgia), back pain, tendonitis, chest pain, gastrointestinal (GI) upset or heart burn, fever, and migraine headache. It is also used for difficulties in childbirth, menstrual problems, allergic reactions, loss of appetite, and kidney and bladder disease."
There is another herb called cat's claw, which I have taken, found it effective for inflammation and joint pain.

(20,886 posts)I know it as guacatoro or maybe guacatorro. My Mexican friends told me the seeds are good, but I couldn't find any info under that name. The pods are sizable. They measure about 3" long, not counting the claws or horns.
A friend gave me a plant and I'm growing some of these guys. I think they are fascinating, and it's even better to know they are a medicinal plant.
Thanks for your help.
