I love the looks of the silver one. It looks heavy, but no pain, no gain.

(10,136 posts)It does have a cool factor, but what Nikon should be shipping is an upgrade to the D300S and to the D700.

(1,771 posts)I like the whole vintage/retro look. Guessing that there's an effort to appeal to 'Hipsters' and old Film Camera users. Photography really has gone the way of cell phones and social media.

(60,077 posts)fell in love with photography with the help of the Nikon F.
Canon is very conservative, not sure they want to venture out of the tried and true.

(4,483 posts)I'd rather spend $2,800 on the new Sony a7R

(60,077 posts)Is a very attractive camera. It featured the top ten features the mirror less fanboys wanted. Even the placement of the EVF and the fact that it swivels is an indication they were listening to us.

(14,040 posts)Though I have been wanting the Oly EM-1, oh and the Fuji x100s and a full-frame Nikon... I need to get a REALLY good job to support my habit.

(60,077 posts)same sensor as the EM5. The EPL-5 is more like the camera I'd want, but I will have to buy the VF-4 if I want the add on EVF. My VF-3 won't work with it. The EPL-5 has a tilting LCD, which might be enough to hold me over until I'm willing to shell out the bucks. It also has a replaceable grip.

(60,077 posts)There's a grain elevator owner in Kansas that is mulling it over. He'll still have to run it past his wife. She will probably say his current camera is perfectly good, and he knows she is right.

(4,483 posts)Their preorder numbers are not where they expected them to be and their DSLR numbers as a whole are lackluster

(50,562 posts)Biggest problem: no video. That's a deal killer for a lot of people. People want their retro with all the modern conveniences; VW may have done a retro Beetle but they put a heater that works in it.
They also ship it with a G-series lens. Series G controls aperture from the body; there's no aperture ring. If a guy wants a Canon EOS he'll get one.
If they really want to do retro, build the F6 metering and AF systems into the F4 chassis...and make it so us F4 owners can have our cameras upgraded.

(4,760 posts)Manual-focus, manual-winding, manual-exposure with a +/- LED meter. IMO that's what "retro" means - not bleeding-edge tech wrapped in the trappings of the 70s, but rather actually doing it the old-fashioned way. It's also invaluable if you want to be a truly good photographer. I cheat a little, my Nikkormat does do aperture-priority but aside from that it's all done by me.

(50,562 posts)They're also way cheaper than digital cameras that don't do as good a job.
Call me spoiled, tho: I like letting my F4 wind the film for me.

(4,760 posts)I grew up with a film lever that made your thumb fall off after three rolls and WE LIKED IT!
This talk of ancient Nikons got me inspired, I did some meta-photography today. Separate thread posted shortly..

(50,562 posts)RB67s have not one wind lever but two: one on the body to cock the shutter, one on the back to wind the film. Fail to wind both and you'll get no pictures. And they weigh seven pounds without a prism.

(4,760 posts)Sent it out for an $80 CLA and new seals last year and it's been absolutely perfect since. Stuff it with Velvia 50 behind some 70s-era glass and I can compete with a D800, let alone this overpriced hunk of bling. I mean, it's nice and all, but for the money I'd go for function over form.

(60,077 posts)M42 lenses that will work well with that body. The Yashinon DX and the Industar 50-2 would be my go to lenses for that camera. The Suntar 135mm 2.8 would make a good portrait/tele lens. That old Kmart 28mm 2.8 is serviceable as a wide angle.
