Yesterday's slap in the face

Got up at 'o dark thirty, pulled on the thermals, put on the -40° Wigwam socks, the lined boots, a wool sweater and a fleece coat. Packed the camera bag (gloves and hat included)... and ended up looking a little like Randy from a Christmas Story when I left the house. (I was headed to PA near the Poconos and heard it was going to be blustery).

We got to the location and I was dressed just right at 11am... wandered into the building, was given a quick tour by the owner and I took close to three hundred photos (I didn't feel as though I took that many at the time). Here are a select few:

The rest on Flickr.

When we left the building at 2PM, the wind was gusting close to 40 miles an hour and I felt woefully under dressed. We checked out another location about a half-hour away and I was outside for about ten minutes and decided to call it quits when the snow smacking me in the face felt like tiny ice pellets. All in all though, it was another fun and successful urban exploration adventure (in a not-so-urban environment). One day of cold weather and I'm already begging for Spring to arrive... I don't know how Blue_In_AK does it.

That is what I call you. You did good. I love that old thread still in the sewing machine. Your pictures always make me wonder at all the things left behind when a business closes. Such a waste.

I actually think it must be warmer here today than it is there. After that zero stuff earlier in the week, it's now mid-30s. We had a dose of freezing rain, as well, and then a couple inches of snow on top. Walking is fairly treacherous.

These shots are wonderful. I love them.

Two days ago it was in the 60's here and now all of sudden it's acting like it's winter (I shouldn't complain, I'm on the East Coast and it does get cold--just not ready for it).

Thanks for the compliment.

Last summer when we had several days of 80+ temperatures (unprecedented for Anchorage), I thought I was going to die. And visiting my daughter in Denver in the summertime is torture. I tend to sit under the swamp cooler or at the bottom of her swimming pool.

And back to your shots, I think it's the lighting that make these so great. They're just beautiful.

I need to live in a mall, I think.

We had great conditions yesterday, it was, for the most part, overcast so we had nice light coming through the windows. I'm so happy I've gotten to the point I can start to see the light now and I'm also starting to see compositions before I shoot them instead of shooting and praying I get a decent shot. It's been a long but fun year. I can't wait to see where I am next year at this time.
