Related: About this forumGreetings from Nome. You want winter?
Damn, it's COLD out here. Not really cold - hovering right around zero and sunny right now - but with the wind blowing about 10 mph, it's pretty darn chilly outside. We went out for a beach walk a little bit ago, but our foreheads (the only exposed skin) got cold and we got headaches, so now we're sitting in the lounge at the hotel with our iPods and iPads just kicking back until tonight when the excitement begins. I guess it was pretty warm out here most of the winter, even with some rain, so now the beach is a solid ice sheet, pretty much what the dog teams have been dealing with for the last half of the race. We walk with baby steps.
If I can ever get my photobucket to load, I'll post a couple of shots. Internet is pretty slow here.
The race has been really exciting, and John Baker's record from three years ago is sure to be broken by either Jeff King (who is currently ahead by 57 minutes) or Aliy Zirkle or Dallas Seavey (long shot) sometime after midnight tonight. There's a mandatory 8-hour layover in White Mountain and then about 10 hours into Nome. Jeff can leave around 3:00 p.m. with the others leaving in order. There are currently 4 mushers in White Mountain and others coming up fast. I won't get any sleep tonight.
These pictures are taking forever to load. I'll post later.
