(131,140 posts)I don't know how I'd catch lightning here, and it often occurs on the far side of the creek behind the cottage, so no good vantage point, even if predictable strikes. Had a bunch last night,

(5,113 posts)the storm was very compact and passed towards an area i could see most of it as well as the lightning. we had another storm come over about an hour later but no luck getting any photos then

(18,219 posts)hoping that you get good shots of lightning? I was watching a storm, and thinking about how the heck I would get a good shot of it. The only thing that I could figure was that you just have to set up and keep shooting and hoping.
Very nice shots.

(5,113 posts)i set the camera up for manual exposure.
used the built in meter to get a guestimate of exposure time. i tried for about 20 second exposures.
took the shot and as soon as the shutter closed shot again. then in post processing i had to boost the contrast and play around with the levels to bring out the individual bolts. a lot of shots just had the clouds lit up since the bolts where obscured by the clouds. I probably spent about 30 minutes shooting. another storm came by an hour later but there were no clear shots of individual bolts
they do make lightning detectors that are supposed to open the shutter when theres a bolt of lightning but they are expensive.

(18,219 posts)Well, since it is really cheap to just keep shooting, especially when you just delete all the bad shots from the thumb drive. Maybe I will try it one day if I am in the right place at the right time for a storm with lots of lightning.
