The kids got me Amazon certificates for Christmas so I decided to get the 35mm f/1.8G. I'm going to see if I can discipline myself to really learn to use my camera on more than the automatic settings with this lens (and maybe a bit less Lightroom).
I've been in a cast for six weeks because of a severed tendon in my foot; the doc changed it today, and told me I have at least another five weeks to go. So, I guess I'll have time to focus on learning some photography basics, since that's really put a crimp in my getting much work done on this place
Nothing remarkable about this shot. Just wanted to post something. Yes, those shelves need dusting.

(19,459 posts)I'm not used to being hobbled, so it's been something of an exercise in patience.
The Doc told me to stop trying to do much of anything til this heals. I was stumping around in a field at Mt. Tam last weekend, trying to get some sunset shots. This was, apparently, not...helpful...to the healing process.

(149,719 posts)I think the picture would be improved by removing some of the clutter around the fan, though.
Still, the focal point is the fan, and it's gorgeous!
Have fun with your new lens, and thanks for sharing!

Hope we get some rain soon.

(36,827 posts)That's a very nice lens. It performs extremely well, even wide open. If you other lens(es) are slower 3.5-5.6 zooms, one thing you should note is the 1.8 is going to perform much better indoors and other lower lighting conditions. The wider max aperture means the viewfinder is going to be brighter and the autofocus (and manually focusing) will work better.

(19,459 posts)I was considering the 50mm f/1.8G, but apparently the smaller sensor in my 5100 makes this closer to a true 50mm.
My other two lenses are kit lenses: the Nikon 18-55mm 3.5-5.6, and the 55-300mm 4.5-5.6. Just in the bit of playing around I've done I have seen a real difference with the prime lens.
I really enjoy getting out an taking photos, but I'm no photographer. I rely heavily on automatic settings and Lightroom, and I've been threatening for years to try to really buckle down and start learning the technical end of things. Hopefully, I'll get a good start on it over the next few weeks of down time.
Thanks for the added insight on the 35mm performance capabilities. Hope we get rain soon; the Bay Area, and the whole state, sure need it.
