I love this fleeting time of year when the flowers are in full bloom. I have beautiful blossoms this year, maybe because of all the snow we had last winter or the good homegrown compost I've put on everything.

(22,756 posts)nice flowers... hey, Blue can I pass these on to my daughter... she is applying for a job in Alaska (Sitka) and is really anxious about moving to Alaska.... seems very 'foriegn' to her.... any words that you can pass on that would assure her that Alaska is an ok place to move to

(46,436 posts)and the weather is actually pretty moderate, much like the Pacific Northwest, Seattle or Portland. Lots of rain, but consequently lots of greenery. It's rain forest on the island, so the trees are huge, moss-covered, really beautiful. Another cool thing about Sitka is that it was the capitol of Russian Alaska, so there is lots of history there and very cool totem poles. That's the territory of the Tlingit Indians, who have a rich culture and great art. She'll love it. (My dear friend, Diane Benson, who I've mentioned here before, is Tlingit.)
The only thing she might find a little daunting is that Sitka is an island, so it's a bit isolated but nothing like Western Alaska which is REALLY isolated. She could always hop a ferry and cruise over to Juneau or Ketchikan if she wanted some variety.
But tell her that a lot of people I know think of Sitka (and Kodiak) as crown jewels of the state, beautiful places with a laid-back lifestyle and lots of recreation opportunities.
I would imagine that your daughter has looked at the Google images of Sitka, but if she hasn't, she should. It really is gorgeous down there.
My son and I went kayaking in Sitka , it was fabulous ! Water , clear as glass . lots of sea life . The town itself is lovely , Rainforest beautiful. A great place to visit .

(22,380 posts)It's not what I envision Alaska to look like, especially after it stole all our snow last winter.
The first one is my favorite. Lots going on in that photo, I like the movement. And the bleeding hearts are gorgeous photos.

(1,328 posts)are beautiful. The climate in Sitka sounds better than what we have here in WI.
I would love to see parts of Alaska as long as it's not anywhere near Sarah Palin.

(46,436 posts)We hardly ever hear anything about her. At least here, she's laying low because her popularity has plummeted. I'll always wonder if the facade she presented here when she was running for and acting as governor -- i.e., the bipartisan, stick it to Big Oil, clean government crusader -- was just a ruse to boost her popularity numbers or if the experience of being in the national spotlight as the "draw" for the uber-conservatives turned her head. It remains a mystery and disheartening to think that if she really was this wackadoodle all along, that she was able to fool so many Alaskans when she was governor. My husband and I didn't vote for her, of course, but once she was elected, we didn't dislike her. I remember her saying before she was picked for VP that she really wouldn't have a problem with Obama being elected, that she actually kind of liked him. The way she appeared nationally at that convention and afterwards was a shock to our systems.
I did see she brought up "death panels" again in a tweet yesterday. She really seems to believe that stuff now, so maybe she did simply use Alaska as her steppingstone. In any event, we really dislike her for doing that.

(46,436 posts)One of the real joys of being retired is that I have time to really work in the gardens. It makes me happy when people walk by and comment on how beautiful everything looks.
I can't really do much about the state of the world (much as I might like to), but I can control this little half lot.

(32,723 posts)A couple built a nest in a bush and every time I go into the yard they try to be intimidating.
It's kinda funny to suddenly hear them buzz you like a bee behind your head.
