It's so cold...

Here at the beach it's so cold that a rat has been warming itself in the sun in the middle of the day while munching on some non-snow covered grass
right outside the door! It first appeared yesterday, and today I grabbed the camera when I saw it there before I opened the door to take
Snowy out for her mid-day walk.

It was 0 degrees wind chill here this morning at the NC beach when we went out at 7 am.

And yes, I will tell the owner of the house. Lots of feral kitties around, but apparently not when you need one!

4. I wouldn't worry about telling the landlord, it's just another bit of wildlife.

There are dozens of species of rats and mice and only two of them are a pest in human dwellings; Norwegian Roof Rats and common house mice. Roof rats are BIG, big enough to give a cat a really hard time and house mice are really small and almost never seen outside a home or building.

The rest of the critters are no more harmful or pestiferous than squirrels or rabbits. Actually less so than squirrels that occasionally take up residence in the attic whereas these field mice prefer the outdoors in every instance.

Let him be and he'll be happy living outside.

5. Based on an ID comparison chart

for Norwegian roof rat and smaller Norway rat, he looks like a Norwegian roof rat to me. He is quite big--as big as some small cats--and the long tail and ear shape are the giveaways.
