My brother in law was among them building what is now the Kentucky Botanical gardens. When he passed away, they planted a Kentucky Coffee Tree in his honor. There isn’t such a thing as a beer tree, so the Kentucky Coffee Tree had to do.

There is one tree I really love at the arboretum, the Honey Locust. It has a very obvious and effective form of self defense. It probably was a favorite of the giant ground sloth, or other large herbivores.

Honey locust honey is dark and rich.

We have the hercules club around here. I've posted some photos of it before. Thorny nubs on the bark.

I will have to look that up.

From Wikipedia

Along with the related Zanthoxylum americanum, it is sometimes called "toothache tree"[2][3] or "tingle tongue" because chewing on the leaves, bark, or twigs causes a tingling numbness of the mouth, tongue, teeth and gums. It was used for such medicinal purposes by both Native Americans and early settlers to treat toothache because of this.

Good on the clearing up but neuropathy sucks mightily. Sorry about that.

I take a mild painkiller for mine.
