***JANUARY PHOTO Contest*** Announcement

OK, folks, it's a New Year! A really new year.

We are going to open 2020 with the theme

In Honor of the Roman God, Janus (god of doors, beginnings and endings, transitions facing forwards and backwards)

For a little refresher on Janus, here's a bit about him on Wikipedia:

In ancient Roman religion and myth, Janus (/ˈdʒeɪnəs/ JAY-nəs; Latin: IANVS (Iānus), pronounced [ˈjaːnʊs]) is the god of beginnings, gates, transitions, time, duality, doorways,[1] passages, and endings. He is usually depicted as having two faces, since he looks to the future and to the past.

Janus presided over the beginning and ending of conflict, and hence war and peace. The gates of a building in Rome named after him (not a temple, as it is often called, but an open enclosure with gates at each end) were opened in time of war, and closed to mark the arrival of peace (which did not happen very often). As a god of transitions, he had functions pertaining to birth and to journeys and exchange, and in his association with Portunus, a similar harbor and gateway god, he was concerned with travelling, trading and shipping.

AND, we are going to be running this contest under the new change to the rules, which is that the WINNER will be awarded the prize of deciding the theme for the next contest, but will not have to host! Hosts will now be volunteers, and will run with the theme selected by the winner from the previous month (or season for the Seasonal Contests). We will stay with the rule that since the winning photographer will be selecting the theme for the next contest, the winning photographer will not be allowed to enter the contest for the theme the photographer selected.

Submissions will be opened on January 11th and held open until the 18th; Prelims will run January 18-21; Finals will run January 21-24. If we get to 30 entries prior to the 18th, I will adjust the Prelims and Finals schedule accordingly.

3. Those changes sound like a better

way to carry off the contests. It's hard for we web-challenged folks to put that all together.

4. Clueless as to what to chose - so far -

for this very intriguing topic.
But really excited about the changes we are making. Once they catch on - I think the excitement about the contests will escalate and return to hopefully its former heights.

The answer is to wait a bit, there will be a “submission thread” within a few days. WELCOME if it’s your first time entering. Follow the instructions from the hostess. They will be crystal clear.

posted on January 11 here in the Photography group. The rules for the contest will be posted in that thread. All photos submitted must be the original work of the photographer posting the entry.
