(14,953 posts)when it dawned on me after chatting w a good friend who had also gotten a pretty good digital camera (I was raised on film) that I hadn't tried my new 12x on the moon. I'd worked my way up on digital cameras from 4x, then 8x, and now I had the 12x.
Now I can't remember (and don't know where those SD cards are whether it was the 12x optical alone, or adding the ditigal boost to ?30x or so but wow!!!
Suddenly I was seeing craters, and craters's shadows, and the darker "seas", and that amazing crater with the
lighter color debris "splash" radiating out in all directions....
without a telescope! Just a plain ole camera!!! 😄
Still amazing!
And that "gibbonous" shape is the "weird" one for me.
Don't know why.
And look at that upper curve where the shadow is how the littler craters stand out in almost 3D.

(149,721 posts)I get your amazement, for sure.
I didn't really enjoy the gibbous shape until recently, when I realized there's a greater chance of seeing the moon as a sphere instead of a disk. I love seeing the rounded edges and all those craters!
Glad you enjoyed my photo, and I'm also glad it triggered your happy memory!

(14,953 posts)Some 10 - 15 years before that I really got to see the
moon close up was one of the nights that NYC's Amateur Astronomers Club set up their telescopes for the
public to view.
While my camera is no where near that close -
the fact that I could see as much as I could w just a
camera still amazes me.
I think you posted some earlier last year one where the moon was in a ?deep twilight instead of w black night sky? Have I got that right?
