Canon made the big announcement. Warning: brand snark!

It's the EOS R3 and it is impressive. Auto focus up to 30 frames per second (almost twice as fast as my five year old EM1 mkii) and it tracks your eye for focus point which is new. It can also identify race cars and motorcycles for autofocus/tracking which I suspect will be updated via firmware to include other items (the EM1x, 2 years old, will identify cars, motorcycles, planes, trains and birds). Weather and dust proof and a lot of improvements in speed in all the ways speed helps; image readout, autofocus (.003 sec!), file transfer and shutter speed (1/64000 sec. My EM1 can only shoot 1/32000 sec). Speaking of file transfer it can send files to a cell phone in incredible speeds for then sending to editors and that is truly impressive (the Oly system is a bit clumsy and requires an app). The sensor is 24 mp which seems to disappoint some Canonites but pixel count has never impressed me. Canon settled on the smaller pixel count for the sake of speed and tonality. It can use sensor shift to get 70 mp but only on still subjects from an tripod (EM5 mkii is five years old and produces 80 mp).

Sorry to show my brand loyalty but this don't impress me much.

Oly has been doing all that (except eye focus) and more for years. Admittedly Canon has a decade to make up and they are learning fast. I expect with two more generations of product they'll be up to speed. The most important thing for me is the dual layer sensor. That is the key to all the speed increases and it's capabilities are barely being explored here. It is also much better at controlling rolling shutter--that's the flaw which creates distortion in moving objects and in some cases can 'freeze' fast moving things like helicopter rotors.

Snark aside, Canon makes fine products, always has and always will. So does every other camera manufacturer from those we never heard of to the patriarchs of history. The technology far exceeds what us mere mortals can explore. That said, it just kinda' grates me that this announcement is hyped as 'world shaking' when it's really just a 'me too' as if the technology they are emulating never existed and was suddenly invented.

One final note: Cameras do not make images. They only extract them from between our ears to show to others. That is the only function of a camera be it Mega $$ or cell phone.

Canon is not always first, but often ends up best, as a total package. How's that for brand loyalty. Bernardo de La Paz Sep 2021 #1

Range as well as pre capture (aka time travel) and 7 stops IS they'll be on the same page in my hymnal.
