Related: About this forumOK, the Nikon Z9 is here for real, no more teases and
it's impressive. This thing doesn't just take existing features from other cameras it expands them to the point that they aren't recognizable. The intelligent autofocus is mind expanding! Like Canon they have emulated as much of the DSLR ergonomics as possible which makes the transition to the new technology a lot easier. I applaud that in both manufacturers.
The Z9 does away with the mechanical shutter altogether which gives burst speeds of 120 fps and video at 8k 30p for 2 hours supposedly without overheating! Also has 8k 60p for shorter periods. Without a mechanical shutter the need to count exposures for potential lifespan is obviated. The Z9 also has a sensor cover that closes over the sensor when the camera is off to protect the sensor from dust while changing lenses. It would be easier to reverse engineer the Oly hyper sonic dust removal system but I'm sure the big guys will get there eventually. It does use a stacked sensor which puts the price at $5,500 body only but that buys a LOT of capability.

From a personal point of view as an Oly shooter it's still a cinder block of a camera although it's 20% smaller and lighter than a D6. Lenses are also smaller and lighter as are all mirrorless lenses. Unlike 4/3s and Sony the mirrorless technology is new to both Canon and Nikon and although they're not exactly running yet but they're at a really fast walk. The new releases from Canon and Nikon are going to make it hard for OMDS to actually lay claim to a 'WOW' camera when they finally announce something other than vapor ware . . .
Disclaimer: I am a hopeless Zuikophile and don't pretend to be unbiased. If you cut me I will blead Olympus Blue. I can still admire advances and cheer on anything that makes photography easier, better and more enjoyable regardless of who produces it. That said, all the technophobia aside, camera's don't make pictures they only extract them from inside your head and show them to other people. Otherwise, cell phones would not have killed the point-n-shoot . . .

IF I were in the market for a new Nikon, I'd look at this, but since I'm not....well.
BTW, I just put my Nikkor 50 mm 1.4 lens on my Nikon body and am now experimenting with this combo. I haven't uploaded any of the photos yet, and I know some will be howlers, and some may actually turn out. I'm still learning!
And your point about the cell phones vs the point-n-shoot is well taken!

Using a fixed focal lens (aka prime lens) presents challenges and with those challenges come the opportunity to stretch la bit.
Above all have fun!

It's as fast as lightning, but priced accordingly.

There is a reason enthusiast cameras still exist even with the whiz bang cell phones.

(17,311 posts)but I can't imagine anyone springing for this camera body and owning the high-quality lenses that wouldn't compromise its capabilities is going to fuss very much over needing to have a pair of CF Express cards.

(8,904 posts)although I'm also excited by a much lesser Nikon too, since I'm all about the long reach, the P1000 which a lot of people would not consider a worthy purchase.
It is basically a point and shoot with a non removable lens that zooms from 24mm to 3000mm, but then has an internal zoom of 4X giving an effective 12,000mm lens. Gulp. I have been following a guy that undoubtedly has a celestial tracking system as he has posted photos of Jupiter and moons WITHOUT a telescope. Wish I could post an example.
My problem to date with the Z series is to achieve full potential of the improvements I would want all new glass designed for the model, even though the adapter for old is reportedly very good, and I'm not ready to completely start over in that respect. Doesn't mean I will not, the angel and devil are on my shoulder duking out right now.

(3,170 posts)I think they're great. Some of my best pics were shot with a Canon SX40HS superzoom. They come in handy.

(1,351 posts)I've got too much invested in glass to switch cameras but the new Nikon sounds incredible. I'm looking at the Canon R3 but I'm not 100% sure yet. I think I'm too old school in that I like an optical viewfinder and I don't like some of the rolling shutter issues with mirrorless.
I rented a Canon R6 to try out mirrorless and I have to say I hated the full electronic shutter and switched to mechanical. I had much better luck at getting my pics in focus with the mechanical shutter than the electronic shutter. There was also some distortion that I didn't care for. I'm sure most of that is just me not being used to mirrorless versus the camera.

(1,351 posts)Here's an example of the distortion I was seeing when using the full electronic shutter on the Canon R6. I didn't see any distortion when using the mechanical shutter. That's what would make me nervous about not having the mechanical shutter option in the Nikon Z9.
