A family of swans

The swans always stop off here at Potter Marsh in the spring on their way to the tundra and again in the fall on their way south. They always arrive early and leave late. The male of this family was off in the reeds where I couldn't get a good shot of him with the rest of the gang.

I gather that the mom is the one with the white head, and the cygnets have dark heads?

The symmetry on the right, and the arrangement on the left is very charming!

You ARE lucky to see such creatures, so close to home.

The cygnets were born in the spring way up north and are now ready to head south. Another photographer there today told me there were over 200 swans here at this marsh last week but now we saw only about 20 and they were way up in the reeds, so it was hard to get good shots of them. He coaxed these out with a swan-call app he had on his iPhone and an emplifying speaker. The lengths we go to sometimes....

He had calls for the other birds we see around here, too, and a handy-dandy reference guide for identifying birds in the wild. The guy was prepared, for sure. I was in awe.
