77th Primetime Emmy Awards: 'The Pitt,' 'The Studio,' 'Adolescence' Take Top Wins

Freshman shows made a big splash at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards where HBO Max’s The Pitt and AppleTV+’s The Studio took the top wins for Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Comedy Series, respectively.

The Pitt, created by ER’s John Wells and Noah Wyle, won five awards overall, including three for acting: Wyle as Lead Actor, Katherine LaNasa for Supporting Actress and Shawn Hatosy for Guest Actor. It’s the first show to win the Emmy for Best Drama Series without a directing or writing win since the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones in 2019. In a pair of surprise, drama directing went to Slow Horses while drama writing went to the now canceled Andor.

The Studio was the big success story, breaking Emmy records with its 13 wins, the most for any comedy series in Emmy history. Creator Seth Rogen won four himself, for Series, Directing, Writing and Lead Actor with the show’s overall haul including Casting, Guest Actor (Bryan Cranston), Cinematography, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Picture Editing, Production Design, Music Supervision and Costumes. Rogen also tied the record for most Emmys won by a single individual in one night, joining Moira Demos (2016), Amy Sherman-Palladino (2018) and Dan Levy (2020).

The Penguin added one win tonight, Cristin Milioti for Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, to its eight wins last week, including Costumes, Makeup, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing and Visual Effects.

Adolescence breakout star Owen Cooper, 15, became the youngest male actor ever to win a Primetime Emmy Award, taking home the trophy for Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. The single take Netflix series also took home the wins for Limited Series, Directing, Writing, Lead Actor for Stephen Graham and Supporting Actress for Erin Doherty. As producer and writer, Graham earned three wins himself tonight.

The Andor episode (I think) was the one with the great anti-authoritarian speech.

I haven’t seen The Studio The Pitt or The Studio yet.
