Related: About this forumSo, am I the only one who's feeling better about True Detective after Episode 2?
I think that last scene so needed to happen. I don't know if I would have made it through the whole season otherwise.

(16,230 posts)*SPOILERS WARNING*
They took an interesting character, with an interesting back story, and killed him off (I assume he's dead. It seems unlikely he would have survived that). It seems like the whole story line involving his son and his custody battle was wasted, as was his being beholden to the gangster. Maybe they can still do something with it. We'll see.
geek tragedy
(68,868 posts)how interesting he was. I thought the dialogue they gave Colin Farrell was awful, borderline childish. There wasn't that much more to learn about this guy.
The only character I have any interest in is Vince Vaughn's.

(53,235 posts)if that would make a difference.

(149,640 posts)In fact, we've given up, and have cancelled watching any more of it.
Incomprehensible dialogue, mostly mumbled. NO idea what in hell is going on, except for the big pieces of the plot.
So much violence.
Ugh.
We don't get it! Maybe ......ah, I don't know. I don't know what to think. It was hard to watch, all of it was hard.
Good luck to those of you who continue!

(16,230 posts)After that, I was able to follow the second one. Regarding the mumbled dialog, I handled that by turning on the close-captioning. I'm not hard of hearing (at least I hope I'm not) but sometimes, as you say, it's difficult to understand what's being said.

(149,640 posts)We just didn't want to make that much effort!
I may check back in from time to time to see what's happening...

(4,544 posts)of the great chemistry between two talented actors, and an interesting, compelling mystery. The setting in the Louisiana bayou was fantastic, too. Granted, we knew S1 would be hard to follow, but I had hoped for better than this. I am not at all impressed, and the ending of Ep 2 left me even more unimpressed. They have hyped this particular actor as a STAR of the series for MONTHS now. If they've done what I think they did, well, that's just too dishonest for me. I have better things to watch than this, and won't waste my time.
geek tragedy
(68,868 posts)was a waste of screen time.
The characters in S1 were human beings. They were messed up, dysfunctional, extremely flawed--but you could see the humanity in them.
This season? Meh. The stereotypical tough woman cop, the highly wound up guy who doesn't say anything of interest. Vince Vaughn does good work with his character, but the small time crook going legit is also a familiar storyline.
Silver Gaia
(4,544 posts)I was hoping they would dig into Colin Farrell's character a bit more. It's disingenuous to hype him as a star and then do what they did with him (if it is as appears). That just pisses me off. The storyline is doing nothing for me, either. Just more thugs and gangsters and flawed cops--not interesting. S1 was unique and awesome. This is just more of the same stuff already all over the tube. As you said, "Meh."

(28,264 posts)I'm pretty much fed up with all the mumbled dialogue, dark settings, and obscure plot lines. I thought the first season was outstanding; I'm finding the current season to be a real disappointment, comparatively.....
geek tragedy
(68,868 posts)may improve things.
But, the real question is why did they have that character in there in the first place and devote two episodes to him?
Paladin
(28,264 posts)If it appears that the show has improved, I'll give it another try.

(4,019 posts)I only watch it so I can tweet about it.
Horrible. Really, some of the lines they've given Vaughn's character? "It's like blue balls in your heart?"
If I didn't know any better, I'd think we're being punked.
Edited because I can't post without mentioning the depressing bar singer. Lera Lynn might be a great singer/songwriter but she sure screwed up with this one, IMO.
Silver Gaia
(4,544 posts)I'll finish it, but it just does not compare to S1. One thing it's missing is a sense of the mysterious. There is nothing like that, so far. That was one of the best parts of S1, but it also had a kick-ass director, and two kick-ass lead actors. S2 is missing ALL of those key elements that made S1 such a great success.

(68,868 posts)Rust and Marty were trainwrecks, but they felt like real human beings.
This season? A series of clichés hiding behind scowls
Best thing: Rick Springfield.
DawgHouse
(4,019 posts)you are right about Rust and Marty. We got to know them personally, outside of their police work.
Not only that but there was a mystery to solve in TD1, something we could follow and talk about. TD2 just goes all over the place with too many rambling trails that don't seem to be that important to the story.
I think that once it is wrapped up, we'll think the story was good but it's the TELLING of the story that is was exhaustive. JMHO
And yeah, Rick Springfield will always be Dr. Noah Drake as far as I am concerned.
