Former Pima County Supervisor Ann Day was killed in a crash this morning, hit by a car that jumped a median and struck her Prius head-on, officials say.

Day, the sister of former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, called herself a "cowgirl from the Lazy B" ranch, a Star profile in 2011 said.

Two big joys in her life

In retirement, Day had two big joys in her life, Alan Day said, sharing that she was an avid bridge player and that she loved to dote on her three grandchildren.

“She gave them great support and wanted to teach them the right way of doing things,” he said. “She was a very loving and strong grandmother.”

According to Alan Day, her eldest granddaughter Caitlyn, 23, attends Arizona State University’s Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law. Her grandson Courtland, 22, is expecting to graduate from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Day had planned to fly her family out for his graduation, Alan said.

Her youngest granddaughter Cassandra, 18, is graduating from high school in Tucson in a week.

“She really loved to spend quality time with them,” Alan Day said. “If she wasn’t with family though, she was spending time playing bridge.”

He said he would meet with her on occasion to play a few games.

“We’ve played,” Alan Day said, before pausing to laugh. “But I didn’t play on the level that she played on. For me, it’s just social. For her, well she was quite accomplished.”
