Arizona loses a treasure. RIP Rose Mofford

Surely it should be raining today, with the news that Gov. Rose Mofford has died. Then again, it’s fitting somehow that Mofford left us on a brilliant sunny day.

As if God himself is smiling as he welcomes her home.

Mofford was Arizona at its finest. Tough on the outside, with a strong, steady streak of humanity and so much heart.

She was a native daughter, the daughter of Austrian immigrants who grew up right alongside the state she loved and rose through the ranks of government to achieve its highest post – governor.

And more than that, to achieve our highest esteem.

Who didn’t love Rose Mofford?

Rose didn’t see Republicans and Democrats. She saw people who loved this state and though they may have differed on how to move it forward, she understood that they loved it nonetheless.

Rose didn’t chase power. She was as happy hanging out in the beauty shop as in hallways of government.

And she never forgot where she come from. In fact, she celebrated it. She was always, at heart, that girl from Globe who made good.
