Dead whale found off Alameda, dragged through bay on ship’s bow

http://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/Dead-whale-found-off-Alameda-dragged-through-bay-6467474.php

Federal officials were trying to figure out how to remove a dead whale that was found floating in the Oakland Estuary off an Alameda dock on Wednesday and could disrupt Port of Oakland traffic.

The whale, whose type was not immediately identified by the U.S. Coast Guard, appears to have been dragged into San Francisco Bay from the open ocean by a container ship this week, said Lt. J.G. Aulner.

Whether the ship struck and killed the animal, or came across it after it died, was not immediately known. In fact, crew members didn’t even know they had apparently pushed the marine mammal through the Golden Gate.

“The ship accepted tugs on the way in and they were told there was a whale on the bulbous bow,” said Aulner.

"trying to figure out how to remove a dead whale," not the port or the feds.

I do hope this was a 'normal' death (although if it was a ship strike there may need to be some discussion of avoidance strategies) and not a harbinger of excess mortality events as seen up north in AK...

Attatch a line to its tail and tow it out to sea. Should be easy enough.
