Crazy situation at [SF Chronicle] after they report a former KTVU broadcaster is dead

I received a call from a KTVU official this morning, telling me they had had spoken to the broadcaster and they are convinced Pat McCormick’s death reported here yesterday was incorrect. An hour later I was on the phone with a man identifying himself as McCormick, who told me the mistake was the product of a “very embarrassing” family situation. He declined to offer more details.

“This is a very embarrassing family situation and I regret it,” McCormick said from his Oregon home. “I’ll take full responsibility for it.”

I circled back to McCormick’s son, Steve “Pat” McCormick, who initially reported his death to The Chronicle, providing specifics and linking to a memorial page. He was seemingly stunned by the news – his voice was shaking – still believing that his father was dead. The Los Angeles resident said he had received a note from his father in September explaining he was in late stage cancer, and a pair of notes from McCormick’s wife explaining that the anchor had died on October 29. (The younger McCormick provided those handwritten notes to The Chronicle, asking that they not be shared because they contained sensitive family information.)

Especially given that his own son thought he'd passed away!
