Three people fell ill and dozens of others were quarantined after an employee in a U.S. Customs and Border Protection office in Alameda opened an envelope containing a powdery substance Wednesday afternoon, officials said.
Police, fire and hazardous materials personnel responded to the 2400 block of Mariner Square Loop about 12:45 p.m., said Juan Medrano, a spokesman for the Alameda Fire Department. Between 20 and 50 people were quarantined in the hot zone, he said, and remained in the secured area as of 3 p.m.
The employee who came in contact with the substance fell ill, and another two people in the quarantine area also reported feeling sick, Medrano said.
Once we identify what it is, Medrano said, we can figure out how to deal with the substance itself and what levels of decontamination are needed.
