Moreno Valley: Fatal deputy encounter settled for $5.5 million
The family of a Moreno Valley man who died following a videotaped altercation with police outside a fast-food restaurant is set to receive $5.55 million to settle a civil lawsuit against Riverside County, according to court records.
Paperwork filed in federal court indicates the amount of the tentative settlement between the county and the family of Raymond Johnson, who died in police custody in October 2013. Records show the lawsuit was settled in late February and a hearing could take place as soon as Monday, April 13, regarding how settlement funds will be disbursed to Johnsons children.
Family lawyers and county officials did not respond to requests for comment.
The settlement ends litigation stemming from an incident that started when employees at the Burger King on Hemlock Avenue in Moreno Valley called 911 to report strange behavior by Johnson, 41, in the restaurants drive-through.
