Uber packs a $3.2 billion economic punch in California

Uber contributes $3.2 billion a year to California’s economy with a net impact of $390 million, according to a report from Economic Development Research Group Inc.

Uber’s contribution is measured as the income it generates directly for Uber drivers — there were 148,000 in California as of December 2017 — and indirectly for workers in other industries as a result of the ride-sharing company’s activity. That occurs as drivers spend money on food, clothing, housing and other goods and services that generate sales and income for other businesses.

The study was compiled using proprietary data from Uber, as well as driver and rider survey data and detailed regional economic models.

Eighty-five percent of Uber drivers in California also earn income from others sources, the study said, but the net income gain for drivers statewide amounts to $830 million a year, which is above what the drivers believe they would have earned doing a different kind of work after deducting their fuel and operating costs.
