Independent voters overtake Republicans in San Diego County

The number of independent voters in San Diego County has surpassed the number of registered Republicans.

As of the end of August, there were 509,359 voters who registered as “no party preference” compared to 487,259 registered Republicans, according to the latest numbers from the San Diego County Registrar of Voters. Both trail the Democratic Party, which has 618,088 registrants.

The surge in independent voters and the decline in registered Republicans brings San Diego County in line with a trend that has played out in the rest of the state. It represents a dramatic shift from several decades of Republican dominance here from the 1980s through 2008.

That dominance remains a feature of county politics.

Lots of local yammering about how Hunter is "innocent until proven guilty", despite all the reported evidence of his malfeasance.

Can't change stupid.

I grew up in Poway, CA.

Funny they don't yammer that regarding Hillary Clinton.

I've been living in SD for 40+ years now, since before I was voting age. Anyway, I switched to a registered Democrat before the 2016 election.

Really nice to see these numbers! Hopefully we will flip Issa's & Hunter's seats...that would be so sweet! Less likely Hunter's will flip but you never know. Lots of minorities in El Cajon and if they are Dems and get out a vote I think it could happen.

95% lean strongly R or D.

Rs disowning their party classification is not going to translate into indie votes for the Ds.

And this sleazy Repug/ DeMaio/Koch Repeal the Gas Tax Proposition is polling high favorables; it will definitely increase the Republican turnout/vote totals.

I would be pleasantly surprised if Democrats win. Are those independents just Republicans who are ashamed to identify by party or see a financial benefit in claiming the I title? Who do you think we should support?
