Tentative deal reached in 14-day New Haven teachers strike, classes could resume Monday

On the 14th day of a historic strike, the New Haven Unified School District announced Friday night it reached a tentative salary agreement with its teachers union, which could mean a return to classes after this weekend for the final week of school.

The district said its almost 600 teachers, counselors and nurses — represented by the New Haven Teachers Association — will get a 4 percent raise covering the current 2018-19 school year and the coming 2019-20 school year if union members ratify the pact.

Teachers also will get a one-time bonus of 2.5 percent for this school year, according to district and union officials. Teachers also could get an additional 1 percent raise if the district receives more state funding than projected in the coming school year.

Teachers set to retire at the end of this school year will also be able to “perform additional duties during the summer in order to earn a full year of service credit towards retirement,” according to a district statement.
