A rare dusting of snow in Malibu on Saturday surprised locals, with some drivers so delighted they pulled over to frolic in the foreign whiteness.
Officer Stephan Brandt of the California Highway Patrol said shortly after 5 p.m. his department received a report of multiple drivers stopping and parking near the Malibu Canyon Tunnel.
They were playing in the snow, said Brandt, who advised such activities were dangerous and unwise.
On social media, the CHPs West Valley Division posted messages urging motorists to stop driving like its not raining, while a later post showed snow along Malibu Canyon Road.

(9,651 posts)So far, just rain. One of these years I'll get snow!

(51,593 posts)over night in Downtown SD. It was 30° warmer two weeks ago.
Dem2theMax
(9,651 posts)so I can't keep track of the outdoor temperature late at night. I live in a valley, or a canyon, depending on which way you look at it. So it's a lot colder where I am, than a few miles down the road.
I know it was 56° in the house when I got up this morning. Cold! Turned on the heater, crawled right back in to my warm bed, and waited until the house warmed up.
I love snow. Not sure my avocado trees would appreciate it though. 😁

(51,593 posts)Plus I have space heaters (expensive in SD). The electric heat is in the ceiling and is great for heating my upstairs neighbor's apt. I haven't used it more than once a year, the electric space heaters are expsnsive too but not as much.

(9,651 posts)If I lived 20 minutes further north, I would be in SoCal Edison territory. And I would be paying at least 1/3 less for my electric bill.
I'm sitting here in sweats, turtleneck, sweater over the turtleneck, under an electric warming blanket, and at the moment I'm not wearing my stocking cap. But as soon as I get out from under this blanket, that cap will be going on. Insane to think that we have to live like this. But I can't afford $$$$$ electric bills.
My neighbors normally have $500 a month electric bills. I guess they can afford to run the heat all the time. My normal winter bill is around $70.00. So that tells you I'm cold most of the time.
I decided to splurge in December and run the heat a little more, just to be comfortable. Not to actually be as warm as one would want to be. $173.00 later, I said I'm never doing that again.

(51,593 posts)since my income is so low. It isn't low enough to get state supplements like SSI but it is enough to get about 25% off of my bill. It is called CARE (CA Alternate Rates for Energy). You can get up to 35% off of your bill. Call 1-800- 644-6133 and see what you may qualify for. Every little bit helps.

(9,651 posts)I remember when it was more like 41%. They keep reducing it, while they keep increasing their rates.

(51,593 posts)and his monthly bill is in the hundreds of $. I recall a coworker paid about $1,000+ a month in SDG&E bills in the early 2000s. That was when they were really ripping everyone off a lot.

(9,651 posts)My neighbors all know that I'm an absolute tightwad. They always check in to ask me what my electric bill is, fully knowing it's going to be much less than theirs.
In the 'olden days,' back when you could go to a dog park, we would all sit and compare who had the worst electric bill during December. When you add in Christmas tree lights and outdoor lights, added family staying for the holidays, December always seemed to be the worst month.
No one wanted to be the 'winner.'

(51,593 posts)and an outdoor high of 52 will be an expensive day to try to stay warm in San Diego.

(9,651 posts)I opened the door to see if I had a delivery that I've been waiting for, and that cold air hit me, and I was stunned. It's usually not this cold during the day here.
Are you getting really strong gusts of wind? Every once in a while we get one that I swear is going to take the roof off the house. We had some hail earlier today as well.
Still under my blanket, and my stocking cap is on my head!
BigmanPigman
(51,593 posts)and I lasted about 30 seconds before I had to go inside. It is 20° below ave temps.
I'm wearing a hat and holding a mug of hot water to warm my hands. It is 63° in my apt. The winds are terrible. Trees are all over the roads. Since I live in Hillcrest there are a lot of hospitals here and the sirens have been going non stop.

(9,651 posts)I actually let the heat get up to 68 in the house and then I turned it off. Otherwise it would be running non-stop.
We have a lot of oak trees where I live. Every time we get a really good rain, followed by high winds, trees fall all over the place. We had a huge Oak Tree in the dog park, and it finally came down. Thankfully, it was after 'dog park' time when it fell. Everyone always goes at 3 in the afternoon. If it had fallen when everyone was down there, we would have had multiple injuries and deaths. It fell right where everybody sits. This happened during a storm a few months ago. But I'm waiting to see what damage happens this time around.
