I replaced Randy Cunningham in Congress. He is still a traitor.

Traitor. It’s a word we throw around quite a bit these days. A popular term for both conservatives and liberals to sling at the other side, we know it’s overused when it’s only one side using it.

The United States is fortunate to have a short list of people who everyone agrees are traitors. These are the people — the turncoats, the spies — who decimate the safeguards we build for the security of our country.

Most of what traitors do can be summed up as weakening our country against international enemies. It is rare, thankfully, that a traitor destroys our security from without and our trust from within.

Sadly, credit for that goes to a former colleague of mine from right here in San Diego.

Randy “Duke” Cunningham never seemed like someone who harbored a deep level of evil. He was a trusted teacher after graduating college. He joined the Navy and, during Vietnam while flying the F-4 Phantom, he earned the fighter ace designation. He was one of the best. Being one of the best led him to go back to teaching, only this time as an instructor at the Navy’s Fighter Weapons School, better known as TOPGUN, where members of the next generation of the best of the best trusted him to make them even better.
