those that bring the most benefit to society.

Cosmetic surgeons making a living on ELECTIVE vanity surgeries should be assessed fees to repay any subsidies received by their medical schools.

Mostly this vast oversimplification works well on the masses because most people see a fairly direct relationship between more work and more money, harder work and more money, and they know their work is directly helping someone.

But the free market also rewards people who cheat, steal, or simply don't share well.

Moreover, incredible contributions sometimes aren't well rewarded because the rich and established businesses can leverage their infrastructure to capture much of the rewards, taking away from the actual inventors and workers. Microsoft made crazy money putting other people's software into windows and office and only paying the creators a fraction.

And of course, some of it is just negotiation. The free market rewards skillful and vicious negotiation. Consider the guy who sold dos to Microsoft for $50k.

The reality is that it's really really hard for ordinary people to get super rich no matter how huge their contribution to society and it's comparatively easy for the rich to get tons of money essentially renting out what they own.
