UC suspends use of logo, says it was distracting



The new and widely reviled University of California logo, which reminded many critics of a corporate signature and others of a toilet, was officially flushed away Friday as UC officials admitted defeat.

"This controversy has created a major distraction," Dan Dooley, senior vice president for external relations, said in a statement, noting that it was "important that we listen to and respect what has been a significant negative response by students, alumni and other members of our community."

The simple, blue and gold logo - a stylized UC - was created in-house at minimal expense, UC officials said.

Few complained when it first appeared about six months ago, but after a newspaper recently wrote a story about it, the criticism mounted.
