Mountain lion spotted in new location in S.F.'s Pacific Heights
San Francisco Chronicle / January 26, 2026
A mountain lion was spotted on video in San Francisco early Monday morning and apparently again in the evening and may still be in the city, S.F. Animal Care and Control said.
The animal was seen in the footage near Lafayette Park in Pacific Heights near Gough and Sacramento streets by a member of the public who alerted Animal Care and Control. In the evening, officials alerted the public about a mountain lion sighting blocks away at Pacific Avenue and Octavia Street.
Park rangers, Animal Care and Control officers and staff from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife headed to the park, and on Monday afternoon rangers temporarily closed the park. After doing a sweep and finding no mountain lions, they reopened it with signs warning people about the mountain lion sighting and with park rangers standing letting people know in person, said Angela Yip, a spokesperson for Animal Care and Control.

On social media, Animal Care and Control said that experts identified the animal as possibly about a year old and likely lost. The agency thinks it could soon find its way south and out of San Francisco.
