Election officials report strong turnout as vote count continues in Butte County

OROVILLE, Calif. — Election workers at the Butte County Clerk-Recorder's Office continued tallying ballots Thursday following a strong turnout on the final day of voting in Tuesday's election.

County officials reported that overall voter turnout has surpassed 45%, exceeding participation levels from the most recent primary election cycle, when turnout remained below 40%.

The Clerk-Recorder's Office is prioritizing the vote count for the special election in Congressional District 1. Early results show Republican James Gallagher holding a significant lead, making a runoff election appear unlikely.

"If a runoff is required for that special primary, we'd have to do that in August to get that new person seated as quickly as possible," said Keaton Denlay of the Butte County Clerk-Recorder's Office. "But it appears that a runoff is not going to be necessary. Those quick turnaround times are still required of us."
