I've called 7 times between 8 and 8:30 this morning. I get a recording saying we are experiencing high call volume, then I get disconnected. I was supposed to get confirmation of my enrollment by Nov 15 or call them. I've been trying to get through for weeks now. I guess I'll try calling Blue Shield to see if they know what is going on. Don't know what else to do...

And, as you indicate, you can do it through a brick and mortar insurance agency.

(3,998 posts)I just called Blue Shield and spoke to a rep. He tried to review my case# but said CoveredCA site was too busy, even he could not access it. He's supposed to keep trying and call me back later.

(16,191 posts)In order to have coverage by the new year, the state has imposed a December 23 deadline for new enrollments. Open enrollment runs until March, but it appears that the majority of new insurance buyers (the majority of whom don't even know what "open enrollment" means) seem to be under the impression that they have to purchase by the 23rd if they want coverage at all. One article I was reading two days ago said their call centers are currently getting about 15,000 calls an HOUR, and the website is serving millions of page requests each day. Their system is simply crushed under the load.
As to your specific problem. CoveredCA had difficulty establishing the data link between their systems and Blue Shield, so anyone who purchased their plans hasn't been processed yet. The last I heard, they expected to get the applications transferred LAST FRIDAY, and they expect to start sending out invoices by the 20th. The state has extended the deadline for the payment of the January 2014 premium to January 4th to account for the delay (though it does mean that people paying monthly will have to make TWO payments in January).

(3,998 posts)You've given me the most helpful info. yet So, I think I'll chill out a bit know they are so far behind. I just don't want my current plan to end on Jan 1 w/out the new one I selected going into effect. I did ask BS to cancel my current more expensive plan at end of yr.

(3,998 posts)got his first statement in the mail yesterday. No healthcare card, just the first bill. He enrolled before I did, so makes sense.
