(3,163 posts)Voting for a political party, regardless of the person or issues involved, is not a proper exercise of civic responsibility. Bob Filner was a Democrat. He was also a criminal and a despot, and that was well known when he was a Cngressmen. He was elected mayor because too many people voted for him simply because he was a Democrat.
He was a monstrous embarrasment to the city of San Diego and had to be booted out of office by special election at great cost to the citizens. I am proud to say that I voted against him in the mayoral election because, while favoring Democrats, I pay attention to who they are and knew precisely who Bob Filner was.
Voting a straight party ticket is easy. It is also lazy and poor citizensship. Civic responsibility demands that one know who one is voting for.

(9,696 posts)One is a republican who you know holds views that go against your political beliefs, the other is a democrat who you might not like? Who do you vote for then?
Yes, bob filner was awful, the time to expose his flaws was before he was nominated. I don't think it's fare to say that voting straight party is lazy if the party stands for what you believe in. Was I not supposed to vote for Gore because I found lieberman despicable? Unfortunately, politics isn't pretty and we are faced with difficult choices.

(3,163 posts)We had, if I recall correctly, eighteen candidates for mayor. And I repeat, he was elected because too many people voted for him simply because he had the letter "D" after his name. They would vote for the head of the Mafia if he labelled himself a Democrat.
And if I have to vote for a Republican, I will do that. Democrats betray us because of people who "don't think it's fare (fair) to say that voting straight party is lazy if the party stands for what you believe in." They haven't figured out yet that the Democratic party, like the Republican one, stands for nothing other than the maintenance of its own hold on power.

(322 posts)And yes, Torlakson for SSPI!!!
My slate:
CD 33: Ted Lieu (he's not a carpetbagger like some others in the race, and he already has developed relationships with stakeholder groups and actually works with constituents regularly)
AD 66: Al Muratsuchi (Al has done a lot in a short time in office. He's über supportive of educators--now as Chair of the Education Finance Committee in the Assembly--the environment, and veterans.)
SD 26: Sandra Fluke (she's smart, a quick study, and principled. She advocates for those with the least voice truly believes in taking action.)

(53,339 posts)Apparently voters have gotten calls falsely claiming that a particular candidate is endorsed by the CA Democratic Party. The Party called to say that the claim is not true. They have not endorsed that candidate--who in fact was not even registered as a Democrat at the time of filing.
