Just look at weather.com for my zip code in Los Angeles. Over the next week the temperatures are going to climb higher and higher, and we'll be in triple digits for several days. Looks like my dear old dad and I will be playing some serious Scrabble. He's 93 - he's staying in!

Gawd.
C'mon, winter!

(75,480 posts)I know when it gets to triple digits here, I get physically ill. No air conditioning.

(9,298 posts)And the trick with that is always to be sure you have a couple of extra furnace filters, right?

(70,273 posts)your 93 yr old dad is able to play scrabble. I care for my mom--last few years and her mind is slowly going--going on 89. Sad and frustrating to see. Oh she reads a lots but when it comes to anything new or out of the routine (she cares for self--and has an aide come in to give tub bath once a week). So, not all is gone but.....
Anyway--here is WI--yesterday turned COLD about 20 degrees below average. Had to turn the space heater on in living room where mom watches TV. Only 60 degrees in the house.
Anyway.. In solidarity.

(9,298 posts)whatever the weather! My mom went through the same thing your mom is, and it's so cruel to watch them deteriorate mentally. My next door neighbor who's a psychologist and specializes in geriatrics, was visiting my dad and me the other day. When he left to rest in his room, she said, "You must do 2 things - take care of YOURSELF and don't put him in a nursing home." Sound advice from a lady who knows.

(20,877 posts)Been invaded by a series of insects, moths, fleas, spiders, silverfish, ants, black beetles, etc.
I have few clothes left now. They all were thrown away as most were quickly ruined.
The humidity is very high where I live here on the coast -- unheard of this time of the year.
I'm waiting now for a contractor to come around to the house. There is damage outside as well.
I have no idea where I will get the money for this as I receive a pittance of an SSDI check and a small pension of less than $100/month.
It is a very bad time for me right now.
If it would just rain once, one good rain -- most of these "pests" will go away back into their holes.
Real bummer this whole thing is to say the least and no, homeowners insurance does not cover the thousands of dollars worth of items that have been lost/dumped thanks to this drought.

(9,298 posts)that is unbelievably rotten news! Agree with you - we need one sweepingly powerful rainstorm across the whole state.

(20,877 posts)and she lost her grandmother's blankets, etc. When I start feeling sorry for myself, I think of her and her situation is much worse than mine.
She has termites as well and trying to sell an old Queen Anne Victorian house that she owns. Being it is infested with an assortment of problems it won't sell anytime soon. She paid $1100.00 to have one rug cleaned and there are dozens more.
As for the mask/goggles thing, been there done that. It is not recommended that I do this being I am disabled and sick with MS. This is not an option for my friend either who is pushing 80 years.

(75,480 posts)It works quite well. Hardware stores have a variety of insect sprays and they are the least expensive way to do the job. Be sure you wear a mask and goggles while doing it. Since I only spray the house the bugs are free to run over the yard. I too am on a fixed income so I can't afford the services of an exterminator. I was overrun with ants and spiders until I started doing this.

(20,877 posts)He was just spraying again yesterday.
The garage was hit with diatomaceous earth, the closet in the living room with boric acid. Closets in other rooms were treated with diatomaceous earth as well.
Problem is beginning to go away after 4 long weeks of cleaning, disposing of stuff, etc.
As for stronger chemicals, they are not going to be used due to my health problems, my husband's health problems and cannot forget the three cats either.
Neighbor in the back has an infestation of gophers and rats and threatens to use "Roundup Ready" on it (as if this will solve the problem!). .
I do not have this problem thanks to the three cats I have (a "natural" pesticide they are IMO). If they end up getting sick and/or dying, I'll know who the culprit is, the neighbor!
Pest control man was here yesterday and told me that I do not have a problem because we've dealt with it in the only way it can be dealt with -- dispose of and/or wash/clean all items is basically where it is at.
What a 'effin nightmare and NO it is nothing that I have done, it is the global warming IN YOUR FACE.
*sigh* & broke.

(9,298 posts)how lingering, nasty weather affects us so deeply. The subject of this thread, admittedly, is a downer, but I think it's good to share our individual challenges, yes?
Good friggin' luck to us all!

(106,886 posts)Live in a small bungalow on the warmer side of town, yet have windows all around. We cool down at night so...
After dark, I open all windows, blinds, curtains, etc. Even leave the front and back doors open 'till I lock up to go to bed.
Early AM - about 5, 5:30 - I close all the windows, blinds, curtains up tight. Turn on a rotating floor level fan just enough to turn over the cooler air that settles at the floor. House stays reasonable until very late in the afternoon. Don't use the oven or stove, unless it's after dark.

(3,998 posts)My apt has central air but it can't keep up in this kind of heat. I have two big fans going as well. I usually go in my bdrm and shut the door. Keep all the shades down too. Pasadena could hit 104 I'm hearing. Not good! I want to fast forward to January
